Super Hero Mufti Day

On Wednesday Reremoana School pulled together to fundraise money for children with cancer. Altogether we raised $519. Thank you so much to everyone who supported this cause. It is one that is particularly close to our hearts here at Reremoana School.

Here are a few other photos from our Super Hero mufti day...

(You may have noticed us drinking milo and eating ANZAC biscuits in some of the photos. One of our first posts next term will be about our ANZAC day mini unit. Unfortunately we didn't quite finish off our red poppy art, so will need to complete it in Week 1 before the big reveal on our blog)

Congratulations Keira, Jaime and Samantha!

Well done to the three girls from Room 15 who were presented with Leadership Certificates from Miss Harland. These were in recognition of always doing good because good is good to do. These were extra special certificates because only seven were handed out across the whole school. Miss Harland was so sneaky, not even Miss Chalmers knew anything about them!

Miss Harland and the management team are always on the look out for children who make good choices and look after each other. In Room 15 we always talk about being the best person we can be and ways we can be good citizens of Reremoana School. Hopefully Miss Harland will visit us again in Term 2 with more certificates for our wonderful students :)

Way to go girls. (Keira was absent but also received a certificate).

On Thursday afternoon, the very last block of the term, we had our Reremoana School Technology Expo. The children in Room 15 were very excited to share our mosaic art with our visitors. The final products were beautiful and something I am sure families will cherish for many years.

In Room 15 we have been learning about Inquiry through Technology. We went through the whole inquiry process, which at Reremoana School, looks something like this:

Pukeko Team Inquiry Question:
"How can we improve our school environment?"

First we wondered about problems we had encountered in our school environment and possible solutions. You can see from the charts below that the problems were very relevant to the children's needs as they see it :)

We decided on creating mosaic art to brighten up our school grounds. The children were so excited to learn this new technique. We even had a few experts in the class who been exposed to mosaic art before.

Next we researched lots of different mosaic designs. We were restricted by a few rules (next time we might learn that these "rules" are actually called specifications).

  • We could only use 60 tiles each (at most)
  • We only had five colours available to use
  • We needed to leave gaps between the tiles in our design for the grout to settle
  • Our overall piece needed to measure 15x15cm

In the final stages of our technology unit we got to practise the mosaic techniques we had been learning about. First we made paper mosaic art in the shape of our first initial. It was very tricky to fit the "tiles" together, remembering to leave gaps! The next day we created designs for what our real mosaic piece would look like. We needed to remember to stick to the "rules" above. After much suspense and anticipation, Week 11 finally arrived and we got to make our final product. See the photos below:

Parents: if you didn't get to see us at the Technology Expo, please be sure to check out the classroom display that will be up at the beginning of Term 2.

Celebration Week 11 - Thursday

It's Technology Expo for Celebration this week, Thursday 17 April.

Two teams will be in class to share their learning from 2-2:30, and the remaining two teams from 2:30-3pm. This allows students as well as families to visit other classes and see what they have been doing.

Kiwi Team (Rooms 9 and 10) and Tui Team (Rooms 12/13/17/18) will be sharing in class from 2pm - 2.30pm.

Pukeko Team (Rooms 11/14/15/16) and Kereru Team (Rooms 5/6/7/8) will be sharing in class from 2.30pm - 3.00pm

Please come along and see what Room 15 has been up to for our Technology Inquiry Unit about how we can improve our school environment.

As a little taster, here is a short video of us creating mosaic art. You can see the final product on Thursday!

Geometry - Weeks 10 and 11

Last week we began our Geometry Unit. So far we have learnt about a range of 2D shapes and begun to touch on some 3D shapes too. You may have seen our Angry Birds on display in our classroom window. We know some pretty sophisticated shapes now!

We also made a big book to share with some of the other classes in the Pukeko and Kiwi teams. We got our creative juices flowing and designed new pictures using different shapes. Check out the video below:

We have watched many videos on Youtube to help us learn about these shapes. We are also learning new vocabulary such as "parallel", "angles", "corners", "sides", "parallelogram" and "quadrilateral". The youtube video below helped us to understand these concepts a bit better (the funny voices helped to keep us engaged!)

In Week 11 we will be focussing on 3D shapes and nets. Stayed tuned for a blog post :)

Room 15 children - do you have any funny jokes you would like to share?

Click on the comment button below and type out your joke. Click the send button. Don't forget - your comment won't show up straight away because Miss Chalmers has to check them first.

Have fun! We'll check back to read your jokes each day in class :)
